It’s time to go surfing, for almost everyone it seems! Well the water is still cold, but it’s warming slightly now! It’s time to put away the winter wetsuit and get the summer steamer out. I bet there are thousands of summer surfers having the very same thought!
This is great news for the UK surfing economy and the Cornish/Devon and Welsh tourist boards, but what about us? Year round surfers, we get frostbite on our naughty bits and struggle to keep surfing all year round, then come spring the lineup is inundated with surf schools, pop out kooks and women on boogie boards! I am sure that many of you have encountered this issue time and time again, you can’t go to Fistral in the summertime after 6 a.m or before 7 p.m without sharing a wave with a hundred or more people. Almost all of the UK’s beaches now suffer with major overcrowding problems. I remember going surfing in mid summer at Croyde some 25 years ago. A time when you were considered a real surfer if you owned a wetsuit! I only venture to Croyde now in the darkest depths of winter as the overcrowding is so bad. Thankfully my local break (I say local but it’s at least 100 miles or 2 hours away in the car away!) is huge and rarely suffers from overcrowding problems, it’s in an area not really noted for surfing and remains relatively un-crowded, even on good days. I guess I am lucky really, my heart goes out to the Newquay, Croyde, Perranporth etc… locals who have to endure the crowds all summer long. The only things left to console us are the fact that the waves are often shite plus our dreams of impending WINTER!
