Sex Wax - bizarre sexual aid or....

Maybe you've heard of this stuff ? maybe not? if you came here looking for something dirty then i'm afraid you are in the wrong place! Sex Wax has nothing to do with any taboo sexual practices! Sure, surfers like to wax their sticks and ride on large swells but I don't think that has anything to do with our love for Sex Wax.

What exactly is it then, basically it is a formulation of carnuba wax amongst other things and was invented in 1970 by Nate Skinner. The purpose of Sex Wax is to supply traction to the top (deck) of your surf board. Sex Wax comes in a multitude of forms, there are varieties for warm, cool or cold water (i.e. here in the U.K.) and many colours and scents!

Applying it to your stick!

Applying Sex Wax on your surfboard is really simple. If you will be applying the first ever coat, it is best to take your time and build up a good thick coating before you even go to the beach! When you are applying wax, use a small circular motion and even pressure. What you are trying to achieve is a bumpy surface that your feet will find it easy to grip to

A little tip for you all is, don't wax your board and leave it upright in the sunshine. If you are wondering why this is so bad give it a try! If you are a real sadist, lock your board in the front seat of your car on a hot sunny day...mmmm lovely!

Another problem with wax is that sand inevitably becomes stuck to it. This in turn has abrasive qualities against the neoprene in your wetsuit, eventually it will be time for a new suit. In warmer countries you don't have to worry about your wetsuit, just your chest ouch!...

Comb on sexy

If you are going to use wax, you should invest in a wax comb. These devices are used to remove the wax when it gets dirty and to scrape furrows into the wax to provide additional traction. You can pick up a good wax comb from most good surf shops for a couple of pounds so its worth getting one.

Grip that deck

An alternative to Sex Wax is Deck Grip. This is a self adhesive ridged foam pad that you stick on your board. Once again your can buy these from good surf shops, brands worth looking at are Gorilla Grip, Creatures of leisure or Da Kine. They may cost a little bit more than a block of wax but they will most likely last as long as your board. Another benefit is that you can be in the surf whilst your buddies are still waxing up!
